Emily Hirsh:
Hello my friends, welcome back to the podcast. I hope you guys are having an incredible week. Is it hot where you are? It is super hot here in Texas. We’ve hit the like every single day will be 90° or above until October most likely. But. 1 thing I do love about Texas summers. That’s fun is the thunderstorm and rainstorms. It is funny because they can never predict them. I mean it just they just roll in and it can be like completely thundering pouring down rain and then gone in like 20 minutes and those are fun I do enjoy those. I grew up in California and that doesn’t happen in California and definitely not in the summer either. So I do enjoy that. Alright I am up prepping this week to head to Alaska on Saturday and host my retreat. I’m so excited. It’s just so cool to see a dream and a vision come to life. I came up with this idea in February when I was taking my thirty days off and I was talking with a friend and I was like what if I just hosted a retreat where you hike and you get massages and. You go on adventures and you stay in a really nice place and then you talk business strategy and workshops in between and I’m like I’m going to do it and here we are.
It’s happening so you know if that’s a testament to constantly taking action. Even if it’s imperfect even if you don’t know every single step but like when you have a vision when you have a dream of something even if it’s smaller. It’s big. It’s a product offer. It’s a whole business. Whatever it is, take the next step. And just make it happen because you will figure it out on the way today’s podcast episode. I felt inspired to share 4 rituals and habits that I implement as a 7 figure Ceo every single day like these are non-negotiables and I feel that you guys will get some benefit around. Hearing them because I do think that they are things all ceos. Honestly, all people should do every day and that it will benefit you. I think that within them you can do them your own way. A lot of times when people teach habits or how to do something. So especially as it relates to like planning or how you personally set up your day, I feel that there are so many different types of people like different personality types, different strengths, and weaknesses like even if we look at human design. We’ve got the generators, we have the manifesters. Projectors like they all operate differently and so it’s not really effective or beneficial to like copy somebody’s routine. I know it’s attractive when you’re like oh so-and-so’s morning routine like I know I always like to know people’s morning routines. It’s fascinating to me but the thing is like you are going to operate differently than me.
You might have more energy in the morning you might need short naps during the day you might not want to work after 2 wo p m like you know the way that you function best is different than me but these are rituals and habits that you can mold to yourself and I believe everybody will benefit from them some of them. You. Probably heard me talk about but I decided let’s put them all in 1 podcast. It’ll probably be a relatively quick podcast and you guys can kind of use them as reminders and see how you want to implement them into your day guarantee. They’ll make a difference guarantee they will bring more presence and more intention. More thought to your business and your life. So the first one is daily stillness stillness means being still it means doing nothing it means not being on your phone it means probably by yourself if you have kids I get it. Sometimes you have to do it with the kids. But. For me this looks like meditation. This could also look like prayer. This could look like sitting outside and staring at the grass like it can look all different ways. Whatever feels the best for you and it doesn’t have to be long, 10 minutes a day. Will change your life ideally doing this before you work. That’s my like. My best case is I get up, I work out and I take care of my kids. Usually that means now we homeschool. So it’s getting them through their morning checklist before my nanny gets here.
Breakfast being with them and then I have a little bit of time to do my routine before I even look at my phone before I look at any messages before I jump into my day so daily stillness like 10 minutes a day meditation prayer stare at the wall go outside and sit in the sun. It doesn’t actually matter. But really, it’s about just sitting there being with your breath being with your body and I mean this alone could change your life and it was something that I really didn’t prioritize until maybe about. I don’t know two years ago and I had a mentor really just tell me like you have no choice but to do this like you need to do this every single day like make it a priority make it top of list and I did and it’s like once you do it I can’t I can function without it but not nearly as well. My thoughts are more chaotic. My anxiety is higher. My stress is higher. I’m not as intentional with my communication. I’m not as intentional with my actions. I feel distracted like literally 10 minutes makes that difference. I’m going to add a bonus to this one because this is something that I do and highly highly highly. Recommend is not looking at your phone for the first hour of the day and even sleeping with it outside of your room. That’s something I do. I’ve got like got off doing that and then.
Went back to it recently because I got a little bit lazy with it and I plug my phone in outside of my room and I don’t look at it for the first hour of my day because I mean I’m sure so many of you listening can relate with the way that you start your day is wake up. Maybe sometimes don’t even get out of bed yet pull up your phone and you’ve got email text messages whatsapp voxer instagram like noise noise noise stimulation stimulation. We’re not meant to wake up that way like that is a recipe for chaos. And if you want to grow a successful business. You cannot operate from chaos. I promise you that you are going to have better ideas and be more clear and more grounded and more strategic if you can operate from a place of intention so number 1 daily stillness bonus points. Not touching your phone for the first hour of the day number 2 is my weekly and daily planning. I think this is a huge contributor to my success and also my productivity in less than full-time hours in a week, between my kids and my training and my business I do not work 40 hours a week probably work on average 20 and when I work it is extremely efficient and extremely productive now outside of that 20 I have a lot of.
Brainstorming time which is the job of a Ceo but I believe that planning is very custom and unique to what works for you like if you took my exact planning process. It may not work for you like it might not work for your brain. It might not work how you operate regardless though I think that every week. You should look at your week and you should look at here is my calendar here’s my commitments that I have my calls whatever you have going on my appointments and combined with that here is what I must get done this week like here’s my top priority. What this does is it puts you in a place of being intentional. It puts you in a place of now you’re operating from intention and really being grounded and clear versus chaotic and like oh I forgot that thing and like shoot how am I going to have enough time for this. It doesn’t have to take long and what I tell some of my clients is make this into a ritual like some people really hate planning. I actually really love it, like I’m kind of a planning nerd, but 1 of my favorite things is actually on Sundays to take myself to a coffee shop for an hour without my kids and plan my week. And sometimes I’ll get some stuff done, like you know, booking travel or personal to dos. But I always plan my week and I created it into a ritual that I actually look forward to.
So maybe you like to do it outside. Maybe you want to go to a coffee shop. Maybe you just want to have an hour without your kids like whatever would actually excite you so that you do it every week and then be intentional with okay here’s my commitments here’s my appointments and my meetings and here are my to dos in order of a priority and now you’re going into the week with a plan and I cannot tell you enough how much of a difference that makes to how much you get done and then daily I do the same thing so I have my list of what I’m doing every week I call it my weekly get to dos. That’s another shift I made. I really have tried to remove as much as possible. You know, intentionally from my vocabulary have to do because we don’t have to do anything like everything is a choice and so whenever I say I have to do this I need to do this I change it to I get to do this and so instead of my to do list like I have to do this. I get to do this. I get to show up and record this podcast. I get to make these slides for this trading and impact hundreds of people I get to meet with my team. I get to do self-assessments like those are all choices. Small shift makes a difference. So every day this literally takes me 5 minutes every day on a pad of paper. I have a notebook that’s just for this. It is only for writing my to-do list. I personally like to write it daily and weekly I put it in my notes. I know a lot of people who use notion.
For planning and it seems like it’s a cool tool but I’m not willing to learn it right now. But I know that a lot of people love notion. So for my weekly planning and my monthly planning I put it all in my notes app simple for me. I’m like such a simple tech girl I do not like apps.
So I put it there and then I have a notebook that is specifically just for my get to do list each day and each day I do my stillness practice and then I look at my weekly list and write down what I’m doing that day and I take into consideration my meetings, my capacity my time and. I’m writing what’s realistic like I’m not writing a list of 10 things if I don’t have any time to do them and then maybe things come up. Someone sends me a message that they need something or I have a meeting with a team member and something comes up on that meeting. It goes onto my list and sometimes I’ll even write the next day’s list the day before because I need to. Think about it and go oh tomorrow I need to make sure I do this but regardless that allows me to live my day with intention here is what I get to finish today. What I need to finish for my team or for my clients or for my business and keeps me very proactive and intentional. My third ritual slash habit daily is unplug time. My goal is always at least 1 hour now I have days where I slip up on this and check my phone or I don’t know I just get hooked back in. But I really try I have my hour in the morning that I don’t touch my phone that doesn’t really count as my 1 hour unplucked I have 1 hour where consecutively for an hour I at least don’t touch my phone for that time leave it in my office usually I’m hanging out with my family hanging out with my kids.
I got this new tool called a Brick. I think it’s like brick app. You can look it up and you scan your phone into it and it will lock all the apps that you want to be Locked. You can customize it. So now I have a mode that is like family time and it locks. Pretty much all my apps but text messages and like the weather app and Safari So if I really needed to text you know because I always ran into that like I needed to text my mom or I needed to text my brother call my brother? But I don’t want to also see voxer when I pick up my phone or see Whatsapp you know so this kind of helps with that, but an hour of time unplugged and it doesn’t really matter what you do, You could read a book you could hang out with your kids like just away from the noise away from the stimulation and I’m telling you like you will get the best ideas if you do this every day and you will have the most clarity and I think.
This is different for everyone, like maybe you want to unplug and go for a walk. Maybe you want it to be like from 5 to seven p m I don’t go on my phone. It’s family dinner time family time. Whatever customize it to what feels good for you but schedule time that you are intentionally unplugged and then the fourth one. This is something I implemented this year that’s really helped in my calendar I have a block an hour every day I don’t always use the full hour but I have an hour every day called communication catchup and as a Ceo you can probably relate to this but there are typically a lot of people who need you. A lot of people who are asking you questions and who need answers on something or need approval or need your way-in and I’ve trained my team to only come to me if it’s a need to know and to always come to me with solutions if they’re bringing a problem still there are things they need to run by me. And we have extremely efficient communication systems and a weekly meeting and all of that still I have email I have voxer I have Instagram I have whatsapp right? And if you just reactively respond to all that all day long. You’re wasting a lot of time I guarantee you. And so instead I schedule time in my day to like batch catch up my communication and at one time I will catch up my email catch up my voxer catch up my whatsapp catch up my text messages. Sometimes there’s to dos that come from that they make it onto my list.
But I batch it all at once and so my team knows if they send me let’s say 3 or 4 questions they just send them to me when they need them. But I’m going to go in at once and I’m going to respond and so you know the biggest thing that I would say out of all of these is creating. Space for you to be intentional and I think so often with the way our world is and technology and social media and our phones. It’s really easy to become very unintentional and create noise and chaos. And I think that leads to so much unproductivity anxiety, lack of clarity, stress and honestly will impact your business growth and so if you can just become intentional with your communication with your actions. With your time, with your energy. It will change your life and you know there’s 1 thing that happened to me when I had kids a lot of things happen, but this was definitely one and I’ve talked to other moms who had this same experience where when you have kids you now have a constraint on your time right. Like for me my nanny leaves at a certain time for some people their kids get off school or the baby wakes up from a nap and so now you have to get certain things done in certain periods of time and that’s all the time you have.
And I find that if we actually put more constraints around how much time we are allowing ourselves to work and that feels really restrictive like I don’t love that language. But if you are just like oh I could get this done whenever and you don’t have the boundary around that and you’re like working late at night and you’re working from your bed when you wake up like you’re not being intentional and if you actually create more boundary with permission to shift those boundaries like they don’t have to be rigid but you will become more productive because here’s the thing. If you tell yourself like I have to get this done in 1 hour most likely you’ll get it done in 1 hour if you tell yourself like I have all day to do this. You’ll probably take all day to do it. It’s the same with longer term deadlines like if we want to hit something on my team. My live event for example. Like we’re doing it on May fourth here’s why we have to do it because the weather in Texas this weekend is memorial day blah blah blah so we have five weeks we’re going to make it happen right? and you just like find a way to do it and so that’s why for me I put constraints around my time and I have times like in the afternoon that I go train. I have times where now it’s time to be with my kids and I have these constraints and so I have to wrap up work by that time in order to hold up my other commitments and be within integrity with myself and what’s important to me in having that harmony in my life.
So if you are operating from a place of like I work whenever and I bounce around and you know I do get there’s different personality types and I hear that that’s something projectors do. I’m a generator so I don’t do that. But I do know projectors. Don’t like the structure and my brother’s a projector and it’s like. He thrives when his routine is different all the time. I thrive when my routine’s like the same but I try to make it different anyways, if you give yourself some boundary whether it’s more rigid or less rigid you will probably get it done in that time. It’s when we were not intentional with our time and our energy. We have chaos. We have a lack of clarity. We are stressed. We feel everything’s urgent and honestly like it’s not good for your nervous system and a regulated nervous system is the secret to business growth while also being present and happy in your life. So I hope you guys. Got something out of these 4 rituals 4 habits maybe you’re going to implement a few. Maybe you do these but you’re like oh I kind of slipped off doing that because been there sometimes my daily stillness I miss a few days and I’m like okay Emily you know you know better. Let’s get back into this because. You know the impact this has and you have to constantly kind of bring yourself back. Alright everybody, I will talk to you next week.
