As business owners, we’re constantly juggling the demands of growing a business, meeting goals, and still trying to find some time for ourselves and our families. It’s easy to feel like success only comes from pushing harder, but what if there’s a simpler way?
In today’s episode, I’m diving into the one strategy that guarantees results—consistency. True success doesn’t come from chasing the end result, but from committing to the process day after day. Whether it’s in your marketing, audience growth, or revenue goals, consistently showing up and doing the work is the most reliable path to long-term success.
Here’s what I’ll be covering:
- Why daily action is the most important factor in achieving your goals.
- How to prioritize 1-3 key areas in your business for the next six weeks and make meaningful progress.
- The power of eliminating distractions and committing to a focused six-week sprint to stay aligned with your priorities.
I’ll also share how I’ve applied these principles in my personal journey, including how they’ve transformed my fitness and business goals. If you’re feeling overwhelmed by your to-do list right now, this episode will help you refocus on what really moves the needle!

Emily Hirsh:
Hello everybody. Welcome back to the podcast. I hope you guys are having a fabulous week thinking about all of you in Florida when this podcast releases today. I’ve got a couple of employees in Florida and I know it’s going to be an intense hurricane and storm. So sending all of you over there safety and love. Yeah, I’ve never been through a hurricane growing up in California and living in Texas, but not on the coast. So I can’t even imagine just kind of like the anxiety waiting for the storm to come. So I am excited about this episode. It’s a simple one and has come from a couple of lessons I’ve learned and also an epiphany I had coming home from Costa Rica. But before I get into that, I’ll share with you guys because I do want to share little things from Costa Rica as I’ve come back.
And I find this one really interesting and some of you may be able to relate, but I feel like since coming home from Costa Rica, I’m at this like crossroads of the past version of me, not just like the past version before I went to Costa Rica, but really the Emily from 20 to 28 or from 12 to 28 years old who thrived off of being in survival mode and having a jam-packed schedule and constantly running to the next thing and overachieving and a lot of things about myself that created my success and that I’m really grateful for is over the last year plus been at a crossroads with this other version of me who really values ease and a more regulated nervous system and not constantly running to the next thing and I find that especially when I go through an experience like I did in Costa Rica and like not just from the experience I had in the sessions that I had but the pace at which my life was that week, which was completely off social media. I would walk the beach for an hour and a half every morning, just like absolutely beautiful, by myself, solo dinners, like just a different pace. I mean, just from not having kids there with me, right? It’s like a completely different experience, obviously not my reality at home.
Not good or bad just is what it is but coming home. My body and my nervous system can’t actually handle the jam packed no room to breathe 110% full force all day. And yet I have all these goals and and I have three kids and I have very big fitness goals and training that I want to do every week and I have my business and I have huge goals there and a team and clients and all these things I want to do and I’ve sat with, you know especially this morning, of like I don’t know what needs to shift and what it’s going to look like, but I don’t want to live Monday through Friday where I don’t even have a second to breathe. and It’s not even just about the business. like it’s If it’s not the business, I’ve jam-packed two workouts in for the day and then my kids’ soccer practice and driving them to school. and bedtime and shower at night. It’s just constantly so busy. And I don’t know exactly what it’s going to look like, but I feel that I’m at this crossroads of the old version of me who’s still fighting, like this is the way that we do it. And if you’re not this busy, something’s wrong. And then there’s the new version of me that’s like, but no, the whole point of life is not to sprint. And I feel like I sprint Monday through Friday. I take a breather Saturday, Sunday, and I sprint again. And before I knew it, a month’s gone by and then another month and a quarter, then a year. And it’s like, that’s not actually the purpose. It’s not why we’re here.
Anyways, I have no idea if any of you relate to that. And it’s always fascinating when this old version of you is like, no, this is how it is. And the new version is like, but it can be better. And then also you’re in that in between where you’re like, I have no idea what that looks like tactically. I don’t know what that looks like because I’m unwilling to give up goals that I have and dreams that I have. And I also do have three kits and it’s freaking busy. My kids are in activities, we homeschool, like there’s a lot going on and that’s just my reality. So anyways, today’s episode is about the one thing And I called it a strategy. I didn’t know what else to call it, but the one thing that I think could be leveraged as a strategy that I think makes the biggest difference in your success in every area of your life, but we can go with business and marketing and talk about that and also an epiphany I had around it. And this is as usual with things that create success so simple and yet we overcomplicate it. So I’m gonna tell a little story and then I’m gonna talk about how I got there and I’m gonna tell a story around CrossFit. So I’m super into CrossFit. If you follow me, you know this. I’ve been doing it for about a year and a half and I actually started out and was like, I want to be really serious about this. Then I convinced myself that I was too tall and never going to be good at it. And I kind of, then I just started doing it. It’s still going regularly, but maybe like three, four times a week and I wasn’t as committed. And I convinced myself like I can’t do this.
And then I had a realization, I shared it on the podcast that I was like, wouldn’t I rather give it my all and not make it, you know, as far as I maybe would want, which I don’t even know if that’s, I don’t think that’s the games all the way to the end because I just don’t think that that is a path that. I need to have but I realized that the reason I would go achieve these goals is because of the process is because why would I not put everything I can into this because I love it and then see where that gets me instead of just determine oh I’m not going to get there. So I had that realization and that was about four ish months ago. And from there, I really, really doubled down on my training. I train about nine, 10 hours a week. I have extremely good recovery. I’ve always loved seeing myself as an athlete. Since I was young, I would train for triathlons and I just love it. I love to optimize my body and so this is a passion of mine.
Anyways, four-ish months ago, it was like June, I really upped my training and I got serious and I made it a non-negotiable. I was unwilling to cut into the time with my family and my kids and so I shifted my schedule so that four days a week I was going back, I am going back to the gym at 3.30 for an hour before my nanny leaves and it’s time to be with my kids so for me that was like okay I have to sacrifice something to make the time to train for another hour every day. I already had my morning routine and so that’s what I did and I became very very consistent. And I would work on, in that second session, every time I would work on, and I’d obviously like alternate, the things that I sucked at. I would work on barbell snatch, handstand pushups, bar muscle ups, I learned how to get, I couldn’t do them before, toes to bar, these are all cross foot moves. And a lot of them are gymnastics based, which I’m not good at as a five foot 10 person. So four months I’ve consistently showed up and just did the work especially around the things that I wasn’t good at and over the last four to six weeks, I continually surprise myself with my scores in our classes, with the weights I’m lifting. This last week, I PR’d three different lifts. like I’m talking my barbell clean, 25 pounds heavier than I could four months ago. Bench press, 25 pounds heavier than I PR’d last year.
Like seriously improved my strength as well as learned these skills that I couldn’t do before. I couldn’t do toes four months ago. I couldn’t do the toaster bar move. You can Google it if you want. Couldn’t do a handstand pushup. Couldn’t do a bar mess up, learned how to do all those things. And I learned how to do it by consistently just showing up and doing it. And then this last weekend I had a competition and for the first time ever I podiumed. So I got third place with my partner at the competition. The lesson in all of this, I have made massive improvements in my crossfit and I’m very excited about it. And the reality is that I was talking to someone about, because my gym, a lot of people at the gym have watched me and they’re like, this is crazy. Like this is really fast progress. Like you have been showing up. People see me in the gym twice a day. And I was talking to somebody at the competition and they’re like, you know,
There really isn’t a secret, huh? Like there’s not a secret to how you are are hitting these numbers and improving so fast. No, the secret is consistency. It’s just showing up and doing the work which is when I realized, you know, anything that you want, whether that’s a fitness goal, whether that’s how many emails on your list, whether that’s a sales goal, whether that is your audience size, your following people, consuming your content, any goal that you have in your life, in any area, the path to getting there is showing up, consistently showing up and honestly doing the more boring and repetitive work. Like I would go into the gym and do the same thing three, four times a week.
And that’s the only way you could get better. And people over complicate this, like if I’m still using this CrossFit example, a lot of people think, oh, you have to count your your protein and get this many calories so you can bulk and you have to have really advanced programming and you have to hire a coach and do all these things. And I’m not saying that those things don’t help. Yes, they help, there may be like five to 10% icing on the cake that’s going to help. What actually is the bulk of creating the success is the consistency of showing up and doing the mundane work, like just repetitively doing it. So if you picked anything that you wanted to get better at, the way you get better at it is consistently showing up and doing it. So if we bring this to marketing and your business you cannot fail if you show up every single day and do something as simple as have conversations with ideal customers. You cannot fail at growing your audience if you create content every single day, unattached from this from the, I almost said the scores because I’m still thinking about CrossFit, unattached from the numbers and the growth. Like yes, that that stuff matters. We want to see that to show progress.
But if you just make the commitment to show up and stay consistent, you can’t fail. You can’t not be successful. You can’t not make progress. It is literally the most simple, proven fact. And I i want to bring this up about like the numbers and the scores because at first in a journey like this, you really have to kind of separate that. Especially if you’re at the stage where it’s more the beginning stages of your business, because before you can make a number, a goal, you have to first make consistency a goal. So let’s say you want to launch a podcast. You need to commit, and this is how I launched mine six, almost seven years ago. You need to commit and say, I’m going to release a podcast on these days of the week.
no matter what. And that is separate from your downloads. You can have goals and actions and initiatives you take to improve your downloads and increase your downloads and have success with that, but the consistency actually has to come first. It’s not, I’m only going to show up and create a podcast if my numbers are big enough in the first 30 days, or I’m just going to quit and throw it out the window.
Or, I’m only going to show up and create content and grow my business if I get enough response and I feel good about it. Imagine if I was like, I’m only going to show up and train for CrossFit if I hit PRs. If I didn’t hit those PRs and I didn’t win this competition, I’d still be showing up this week and training because my goal and my commitment to myself was the volume and the consistency of the training because I knew that there is no way that that wouldn’t equal me getting better. So when we look at our business and our marketing, Where are the areas that you are committed to consistency? Like where is that the number one goal? And then here’s the epiphany I had coming home from Costa Rica, because I realized a lot of times people like me, I try to do too much at once and That that’s fine to to try to optimize everything and I believe in the core value of having it all which means I want to be able to show up in all the areas of my life well but there’s also seasons where one area might get more attention than another and so I realized If I started looking at my business, my health, my, my personal life, my family, and I said, let’s, let’s chunk this down into like a six week sprint. They do this a lot in software where developers will have a six week sprint and they’ve got only a couple of major goals that they’re working on during that sprint. And then you reevaluate and maybe you’re doing something else for that goal after the six weeks, or maybe you’re changing it and you’re doing something else.
And I realized like, why don’t I bring that concept into my business? And instead of trying to do a bunch of things, if I was to boil it down and say, okay, over the next six weeks, these are the only three major things that I’m going to focus on. Of course, I have regular activities like responding to emails, supporting with clients, supporting my team, like, but I’m talking actual initiatives and projects and goals and what if I brought that concept over into my health as well? And I had one main goal for CrossFit over the next six weeks. Instead of trying to improve everything, which there’s a lot in CrossFit, instead of trying to work on all the things, the gymnastics and the lifting and all these things and my cardio, like what if I just dialed in? It doesn’t mean I’m not going to work on the other things at all, but I dialed in and my number one focus was something specific. And what would happen?
And so coming home from Costa Rica, I sat down and I actually chunked out my business, my health, for me, my training’s really important. So that may not be a category for everybody, but my health, my training, and my relationships at home. And I made a maximum of three focuses for each for the next six weeks. So basically from October, this was beginning of October to middle of November. And then I’m going to reevaluate it. And every week I’m coming back to that focus and I’m saying, okay, these are my three main things or for CrossFit it’s less. I have one main focus for the next six weeks. And again, it doesn’t mean I’m not going to do anything but that, but that’s my focus. That’s my priority because then I can do that really, really well. At the end of the six weeks, I can evaluate and I can decide, do I want to continue working on that because it still needs a lot more work or do I want to switch and work on something else the next six weeks? There’s a lot of power in this. So what I want you guys to take from this episode is number one, you need to, in every area or any goal that you have, understand that the number one priority above metrics, above anything else is consistency.
And then you need to define what that means. Like if you ask yourself, what does consistency look like when it comes to making more sales? What is something that I can do and show up and do every single day that there is no way if I keep doing that every day, I won’t see progress. And then you can take that into the other areas of your life. Second thing is when we look at the consistency, when we look at our goals, how can I boil it down to one to three focused areas in the major categories of my business that yes, other things might be happening. and I might have to put my time in other things, but if I just take my time and my energy and I put it very strongly into those three things, and that is my number one priority. And I continually come back to that. Think how much more progress you’ll make in the next six weeks. Also on that note, one thing I’ve realized is when you look at your life in those chunks, when you look at business, your health and yourself, your relationships and your family, and you break it into those chunks, you can decide, well, for the next six weeks, my business is going to go through a launch.
We’re going to release a new offer. We’re going to launch a podcast, whatever. It needs more of my attention. So I might have three main focuses for the next six weeks for my business and only one for my health because I know that more of my energy and attention is going to go to my business over the next six weeks. I still want to maintain my health and I want to focus on it, but I’m going to be realistic. And so this is the one focus for me. And then I have one for my family. Like this is the minimum that I want to do. And then maybe the six weeks comes and it’s like, okay, we’re through a launch. We’re going to shift this season. And now I really want to spend the holidays and some extra time with my kids finishing out the year. So I’m going to put some more focused attention there and less on my business, which creates this level of intention and really present with your time and your energy. And I’m telling you guys, this is so powerful because we live in a world where it is so easy to be scattered. It is so easy to feed into the chaos. It is so easy to get eaten up by the shiny objects or you hear somebody say something on a podcast or you see somebody do something or a follower and you’re like, oh, that’d be a good idea.
And you convince yourself you need to do that. And it’s like, but wait, let me come back to my commitment to consistency and my number one focuses. And let me put some blinders on and let me go all in on this and just test it out. Like for the next six weeks, do this. Go make your list today. Determine what consistency looks like for you in all these areas. Go all in in the next six weeks. Cut out the noise, less consumption, more intentional, channeled energy and time into those areas. and i Promise you 100% without a doubt, you will come back in six weeks and you’ll be like, that’s so simple. And I’ve made more progress in six weeks than I have in the last year. And we just don’t realize this because we live in a world that is filled with that chaos and noise. And that’s the normal thing is to constantly have too many things on our plate and so many things we could focus on and so many areas that were falling short and never enough time. So much noise, so much consumption, so much chaos. You have to battle against that intentionally and choose differently.
So I hope this helps you guys. I’m going to continue with my training and so much to like a side note on that. When you focus on the consistency and the showing up, there’s also an element that you don’t know where that’s going to lead. And you’re open to the unknown because it’s not just about the end goal. It’s also about the process. So for me with CrossFit, I have goals. I do have a goal that in the open, which is that anybody can submit. It comes in I think like February or March, anybody can submit to the open. And then from there you qualify to quarterfinals, semifinals, and the CrossFit Games. The top 20% in the United States qualified to go to the next level. For me, if I got that next year, it’d be a huge win. So that’s a goal I have. But I care more right now about the journey and wherever that’s going to take me. And so when you focus on the consistency, then the joy now comes from the process and the journey and not the end result.
So while yes, it’s good to have goals in the end result, but then when you maybe don’t hit that end result, you’re open to and you realize, well, maybe I wasn’t meant to hit that end result. Maybe I was actually meant to do XYZ, which if I didn’t go on this journey and I didn’t stay consistent and I didn’t follow this process, that opportunity never would have opened up for me because the joy really needs to come from the process. Otherwise you’re setting yourself up for the moment you don’t hit a goal you’re going to give up and you’re going to quit, which you don’t want to do that because there’s going to be many times that we don’t hit a goal, but that’s part of the process. That’s part of trusting that unknown and staying committed to the journey and the consistency. All right, everybody. I will talk to you next week. Thanks so much.
