I don’t open my own email anymore. And it’s one of the best decisions I’ve made for my business and my energy.
Most entrepreneurs think they need to do everything themselves to maintain control. But what they’re actually doing is burning through their most precious resource – their mental energy – on tasks that drain them instead of fuel them.
In this episode, I’m sharing why protecting your time and energy is your most important CEO skill, the radical ways I delegate work that used to consume my days, and why embracing non-linear growth (including the boring foundation work) is what actually creates breakthrough results.
If you’re feeling drained by your business instead of energized by it, this episode will shift how you think about what deserves your attention.
Key Takeaways
- My Delegate or Die Mindset—why I have my team read my emails out loud and other ways I radically protect my CEO energy.
- Why Boring Will Make You Millions—what my client’s tech migration taught me about embracing unsexy foundational work that leads to massive growth.
- Why Unplugging Makes You Money—the energy management framework that let me take a month-long trip while having my biggest cash month in 2025.

Emily Hirsh:
Nothing in life is linear. We go up, we progress, we go back down. Maybe it’s not even a down, but we gotta fix a foundation. We have to address this and then we shoot back up. You can’t have a business without a messaging foundation, without an offer, foundation, without your foundation, and you can spin your wheels all day long with strategy and funnels and ads.
If you don’t have that foundation, it’s only gonna work so well. You gotta get obsessed with this boring work. And everything else will get better. That is where most people quit. Embodied CEOs don’t chase trends. They pave the way. They lead from within. Move by purpose, unshaken by noise. When you are the source, you do not need permission.
Hello everybody. Welcome back to the podcast. I am. Coming at you very refreshed and excited to be back. I am so grateful We had the most incredible summer trip. If you follow me on Instagram, you maybe got to see some of the beautiful hikes and mountains and exploring that we got to do. I I am beyond grateful like that.
That doesn’t even capture how grateful I am for this life that I’ve created my business and mechanism of. Allowing this to be possible since I was young. I’ve always loved to travel. I used to, I had businesses when I was like 13 years old, and. I used to work and work for my grandma or work for other people in this business I had of like organizing and cleaning.
And I would literally save my money even at that age with the intention of I just wanna go on trips. And my grandma traveled a lot. She traveled around the world, everywhere. Like she has been everywhere, every continent. So I think I get it from her. But it used to save my money and she would tell me if I could pay for my plane ticket that she would take me.
On her trips, and so I’d save my money and then she’d take me on trips. And today I’m, I’m still doing the same thing, saving my money to go on trips. We got to go and start in Banff, in the Canadian Rockies. 10 outta 10. Recommend, like, cannot recommend it enough. It. Topped everywhere that I’ve ever been.
I’ve been to Alaska, I’ve been to Montana, I’ve been to Colorado. I’ve been to a lot of mountains. I love mountains. I love hiking. I call it my church. And Banff was incredible. The Canadian Rockies are something else, so if you can make it there, can’t recommend it enough. We drove down to Montana, saw Glacier National Park over to Idaho and Coeur d’Alene, and then Oregon.
We did the border of Oregon and Washington and Hood River. And then we went up to port Townsend in Washington, which is actually where my husband moved when he moved from England. So it was cool to get to show the kids that the Puget Sound we did a day in Seattle. It was amazing. I feel like my social media is gonna be very boring now ’cause every day I got to post these like incredible hikes and different places we were going.
But I am, I’m just so grateful. We brought my nanny, which isn’t. In and of itself, incredible. And just to have someone that we can unravel with, right? Like that’s a pretty intimate personal experience and. If we get along great, we all have the same values. We wanna go out and explore and hike and appreciate the nature is really what we did.
So I thought I was gonna work a lot more on the trip and ended up just doing the bare minimum and the company is having its biggest cash month of the year. So I feel like there’s a, a sign there from the universe for sure. And. I’m, I’m just, yeah, so grateful for this and I, I really believe I say this on here.
I believe that your business can be a mechanism for your dreams and your impact, and I have built my business and my life around knowing what my dream looks like and getting to take my kids on experiences like this and make these memories and take them on hikes to get to see these incredible things.
That’s my personal dream. And you know, it’s kind of beautiful because we live in Texas, which I really don’t love the heat, and I wouldn’t say I love Austin. Like Austin’s cool, but I. I really like nature and I think if you would’ve asked me when we moved from California, my dream place to live back then, I wouldn’t have known it.
But it’s the mountains for sure. And I wouldn’t have chosen Austin. But because it’s so hot here, it creates this opportunity for us to leave and, and escape the heat and go on these amazing trips. And so it’s like I may not do that if I lived in the mountains full time. So anyways, there’s a little personal update.
- Feel inspired to talk about two different things today. I thought about making them their own episodes, ’cause they definitely could be, but it’s like two CEO business lesson things on my mind. And one of them came up, I just kicked off the embodied CEO Mastermind, which by the way. I am so excited. We have seven incredible business owners in this group, and we just had our first call today and the level of value in that one call, not just.
Because of me, because of the amazing business owners with all these different experiences and questions and perspective and like way that they’re looking at their business, came to this call and in one call it was like in incredibly valuable and I’m able to pull resources and you know, other people weigh in on a few things and it was amazing.
So while I was on this trip, I was enrolling people into the mastermind, texting with them, DM-ing with them. I sold every spot of the Mastermind without a sales call, and it just speaks volumes to your warm audience because every one of them has been in my audience in various ways for various amounts of time, but they all know me are connected to me and.
It’s such an incredible group. It’s one of my favorite things that I get to do my retreats in my mastermind because the impact is so large and it is truly what I do best, which is go deep with someone and coach from the business strategy to the mindset. So one of these topics came up as a lesson that I got to share with them based on what someone said.
And another one came up on a call with one of my VIP clients. And so I think these are two really good. CEO strategies, but also reminders. And one is a lesson I’m currently learning outside of business, but I was like, oh, this really applies to business. So the first one is how everything is not linear.
So let me explain this backstory is if you follow the podcast, you know that I train pretty seriously in CrossFit. And I’ve upleveled my training. I’ve been doing CrossFit for about two and a half years. I started CrossFit with the intention of I wanna train to compete. I want something that gives me that purpose, that gives me that direction.
I had spent, you know, years, 10 plus years, 15 years, always working out. To be in shape, but I wanted to train for a purpose. And so I started CrossFit knowing I’m gonna compete, like I’m gonna treat this like training versus just I’m going to work out to stay in shape. And so over time I progressed and I added, you know, from one workout a day to two, to doing two hours a day, to adding a more programming, to eventually hiring a one-on-one coach, which I hired in January.
And you know, through this process, you’re naturally like. You’re going like this, right? You’re, you’re improving. You’re seeing your numbers go up. Weight numbers, you know, cardio improving. Everything is ideally improving as you go up. And I’m putting a lot of pressure on my body to perform. And I know that, I think that when you train anything seriously, you’re doing that, you know, whether it’s martial arts or soccer or.
CrossFit, like I think CrossFit gets a bad rap and I really do understand why. But anything that you’re going to train in that way beyond just functional fitness and being in shape, you’re putting yourself at risk for injury, for fatigue, all those things. So I have been adding, you know, training and I hit this point where I was starting to feel back pain and.
Basically in short, because I could probably talk about this way too long and you guys don’t care I am not engaging my deep core muscles and what’s called your transverse abdominis, your TVA and my small segmental. Stabilizers in my spine the way that I should be, and so on my nervous system, when I go to do a really complex lift like a snatch, my big muscles and my big movers do all the work and the small ones are not doing their job because the actual mind body connection is not properly functioning and firing, and so it’s causing back pain for me.
And I’ve been seeing a chiro and I like, I can keep it kind of fine, but I went four weeks and I didn’t see my chiropractor. I hiked like 45 miles one day. I hiked 18 miles in a day. We got up at 4:00 AM and did this hike, and then we drove in the car a bunch and I still kept up my training. I didn’t miss a day.
I dropped into five different gyms, like I got every day of my training done as if I was home, which took effort. By the end of the trip, my back hurt pretty bad and at first I had the mindset of I was, I was annoyed. I was like, my husband is very good at movement science. And on the trip he’d watch me squat or snatch and he’d be like, this is what’s happening.
Basic. Your TVA is not firing these core muscles. Okay? How you fix that, you guys is really boring. It’s like these little movements that you fire your breath and your belly and it’s so boring. And so I didn’t wanna do it, and I kind of ignored my husband, and so my mindset was like annoyed, like, I wanna keep training.
I’m just gonna ignore this. Bad idea and push through this. So then I go see my chiropractor yesterday and he’s awesome. He spent an hour and a half with me and I told him what my husband said. He looked at me, he worked on me, he took me out to the gym, he watched me move. And he is like, your husband’s exactly right, like you’ve gotta skill back so we can fix this.
And then. You can scale back up and it’s not gonna take that long and just spend two weeks, drop it down to 50% of your load and do these exercises that I give you so we can get your core muscles and these small little muscles and stabilizers, stabilizing muscles firing when you go to do these big lifts.
Because when you go to do the big lifts. There’s no way if that connection is not there, you’re not gonna get that connection in the big lifts. You gotta scale back basically to do boring, boring shit, honestly, like bird dogs and literally laying down belly breathing. So he said something to me though. My chiropractor said, Emily, you are not gonna lose progress in your training.
You are not gonna go backwards because. Life. Nothing in life is linear. You have this right? We go up, we progress, we go back down. Maybe it’s not even a down, but we gotta fix the foundation. We have to address this and then we shoot back up. And if you think about, it’s like the down sometimes causes the up the next up.
And I was like, oh, okay. My whole perspective shifted after that appointment one. ’cause it was confirmation that my husband was right. And I knew what I needed to do, but two, I’m like, how incredible that I’m being given this lesson without a serious injury because I keep on this path and I’m gonna have a serious injury, like the amount of load I’m putting on my body lifting when I’m not technically doing something properly.
And it’s fine that I’m not doing that thing properly, but not fine if I’m gonna lift for hours a week. I, I would’ve been on the path to an injury. So how, what a gift that I’m being given this lesson to. I don’t have an injury that’s gonna completely stop me from working out for six weeks. I’m, I can still work out.
Movement is actually very good for it. When I sit it, it makes it worse. So movement is good for it and I get to fix this foundational stuff. And then once I fix the foundational stuff, what do I think is gonna happen to my, my lifts that I was already doing? Of course they’re gonna improve. And I said to my husband yesterday, I am like, it’s just like you can’t have a business without a messaging foundation, without an offer, foundation, without your foundation.
And you can spin your wheels all day long with strategy and funnels and ads. If you don’t have that foundation, it’s only gonna work so well. You go back down to the boring stuff. Messaging offer, positioning, business structure, and the foundation that, that we all wanna skip. ’cause it’s not as exciting as coming up with a new, cool strategy or a content or launching a podcast or any of those things, but you fix that and everything else you do gets better.
I was like, of course. Which made me realize everything’s not linear and for sure, subconsciously and without me fully. Realizing it. That was my expectation, and I was actually upset when I realized that wasn’t gonna be the case and I associated it with them to go backwards. Like I work so hard in my training that for me to have to quote, scale something back, it feels like.
I’m taking three steps backwards for all the work that I did, but I realized yesterday, no, you’re gonna fix this. You’re gonna get obsessed with the boring work. That’s what my chiropractor said to me. You gotta get obsessed with this boring work and everything else will get better, and like this is where the true results are going to happen.
And I think, you know, in any, in any situation, like when you are wanting to be the best and to go big, you know, for me in business, but in CrossFits, like there’s a lot of things that have to happen behind the scenes that most people don’t see. And it’s the same in business. And business is not intended and will never be linear in a constant.
Like there’s not a single business that for 10 years, decades at a time, is just climbing up because something eventually breaks, or the economy shifts or the market shifts or the need of the ideal customer shifts and you gotta go back and you gotta fix the foundation because of that shift. And then you can move forward.
And one of the girls in the mastermind. She’s a longtime client of mine and friend and I, so I know her business well, and she just went through like an eight month tech migration, fixing things that weren’t working, updating every one of her landing pages, every one of her sales pages prior to this.
Doing. The trigger to doing that was because stuff was breaking. She built her business on, you know, certain automations and a platform and she had a hundred thousand people on her list and stuff was breaking, so she had to change something. This whole experience, like prior to to that starting to happen, she’d been on a climb doubling her business.
More revenue, more revenue, more revenue. Those things started happening. Her launch didn’t do as well. I mean, still did well, but not as well as it used to. She made the decision to, to fix the foundation during the time of fixing the foundation. Her business wasn’t growing and that was scary for her, right?
Like there was moments of her saying, I like dealing with the tech and the migration and, and the headache of it all, and everything she had to go through to get it back even stronger. It wasn’t fun. Like it was not fun. That was not what she wanted to be doing, but it was necessary for the next level. And sure enough, in the last two weeks she’s finished that migration.
She has fixed a lot of the tech issues that have come up. In the migration redone, our team is redone. All of her landing pages, her sales pages, her emails, like literally everything in her business. And she is getting more sales every single day. Like it’s on the up again, but it’s on the up on a much more solid foundation.
So I wanna say this and mention this because I had a complete perspective shift. Like I went from one day being like. In victim mode of this sucks. You know, I know this is related to my training, but I for sure had, you know, times like this in business too. This sucks. I don’t wanna deal with this. Like, this is stupid.
I don’t wanna do these boring workouts. Like I just wanna keep training. I love it so much. And then shifted my perspective to understanding, oh, this is completely necessary to get to the next level. And you can either fight it. End up injured and then really delaying the next level. Or you can lean into this, see it for what it is, be grateful that it was handed to you in this way, and go all in with it, right?
Like I’m going all in on these boring exercises and I’m still doing my regular training. I just had to cut back the weight and that sucked for me to tell my coach like 50% of the weight max for the next two weeks. Same. With my client. It sucked in that moment. Like you’re not like, yes, I’m working on the foundation and I’m gonna be at the next level.
You’re like, this sucks and I don’t wanna do this. Like I wanna quit. I don’t, I don’t wanna do this. My revenue isn’t where I wanted. It’s not fun anymore. And you have that, those feelings and that, and I said to her today, I’m like, that’s where most people quit. That is where most people quit. So regardless of where you’re at in your business, this is a reminder to you to be grateful for the times that are making you go back to fix the foundations.
Go back to be stronger, slow down to speed up, because that is life and that is business. And we can handle it and take it two ways. One way is being pissed about it. The other way is being grateful for it and leaning all the way into doing it the best. Because the more you do that and the more that you really focus on how do I embrace this season so that I can catch everything, I can fix everything, I can improve everything so that I can get to that next level.
And I think from a business perspective, I wanted to talk about this because. And especially with things like the market, changing the economy, changing buyers’ needs, changing social media, changing the saturation, you’re naturally going to have seasons in your business when it maybe dips and it’s what you do during that time that dictates how quickly you get to go back up because you, you can’t keep doing the same thing.
That’s the other part. I was having back pain. If I kept doing the exact same thing in the exact same training, I’m gonna blow a disc in my back like it’s not gonna work. It’s only gonna get worse. So I can be in denial about it, or I can go, something here is not working. This is a symptom. This is a symptom of something in the foundation of something that needs to be addressed and address it and then progress back.
Same in business if your sales are going down. Or your marketing isn’t working as good as it used to, then you can either say it’s the ads, who can I blame? It used to work this way, and I have seen so many entrepreneurs get stuck in a place of like, well, it used to work, so it should, and like trying to force something to work.
Or you can go, what do I need to see here? Let me take a step back and see what is this a symptom of? What is the message here for me? What is the lesson? What do I get to take different action on? The faster you move into that, the faster you get to move to the next level. So that’s the first thing I wanted to talk about, which is just the reminder.
That nothing in life is meant to be linear. And thank you to my amazing chiropractor for that lesson yesterday and reminding me, ’cause I left the gym in a much better mental place. Once I was like, alright, I’m in. I’m in. I’m committed to this. I see it. I’m grateful for it and thank God I don’t have a more serious injury.
Second thing I wanna talk about is a conversation I had with one of my VIP clients who has. I gotta have him on the podcast soon. Hopefully he can make it to Austin. But he has been working with us for almost a year in our VIP package, which means I do the strategy and my team implements. So we only have a handful of clients in that package.
It’s basically like we are the fractional CMO. So he’s been working with us for almost a year and massively grown his business. So much so that he is needing to hire so much personal support because his time and energy is so limited. And we were on a call and he is like, this isn’t really marketing related, but I wanna ask you like, how do you manage getting support for you personally?
And I feel almost bad, like. I’m not gonna bring my packages in, you know, for, from the mail. Like, are you too good for that? And I feel guilty about it, but I also know my time and energy is, is stretched and I need to protect that. So it led to this really cool conversation where I explained to him like, the one thing that I think is.
So critical as you grow your business and the people that do this faster than others will grow faster, is radically protecting your time and energy. And I’ve talked about this on the podcast before in terms of how I do it, but I think it’s a skill that I have that has really contributed to my growth.
And that is, I analyze anything and everything sometimes to a fault that I am gonna put my time into. And if it is not gonna move the needle, meaning it’s not gonna move the needle in my business, somebody ’cause somebody else could do it, or it’s not gonna move the needle in terms of pouring into a relationship that I care about, for example, friends and friendships that I don’t care about, like, or that are not really serving me, they’re draining me.
Negative people. I’m not gonna just be nice and hang out with those people, or it’s not moving the needle in my training. It’s not moving the needle in my goals in my dream life. And it sounds selfish when I say it. I’m like, that sounds kind of selfish. But the reality is this, it’s my life and I’ve only got this one on this earth as Emily Hirsch, and I’ve got a lot of stuff I wanna do and a big impact I wanna make and a a life I wanna create for my kids.
If I can spend most of my moments intentionally doing things that I know I should be doing or that only I can truly do, or that really are the right energy and energy giving, for example, I will not hang out with people who are gonna talk. Shit or complain I cannot do it anymore. And, and there’s a lot of people that, that’s their, their life is, let me talk about how bad things are with my life and let me complain about this.
And I just, I, I have zero tolerance for it. I don’t need that energy. So I was explaining to my client the next level for him as a CEO. ’cause he’s hitting that million dollar mark and he’s grown so fast, so amazing to watch Is. Protecting every ounce of your time and energy, and I was explaining to him.
For me, when I even open up email and I see all the email communication, it drains me. Now obviously I need to have an email, but I will literally get on the phone with my team member Morgan, who is on the podcast, and she will tell me the emails that need a response. I’ll verbally tell her what to reply and she’ll reply for me, and it sounds so silly, but I swear to you, like for me, it saves me so much energy.
Maybe not even time, like maybe only saves a little bit of time. And it’s spending Morgan’s time. But from an energy standpoint, if I know I don’t even need to open my email, I don’t have it on my phone. I don’t need to open it on the internet, and I can just get everything handled in a 15 minute phone call.
It saves me massive amount of energy and probably a little time too. So those little things like. Protecting notifications off minimal apps on your phone. I don’t wanna know the noise of the day to day. I wanna have targeted meetings with my direct reports where we run through everything. If a team member, this just happened today, and sometimes they do it by accident, but it just happened today I had a team member ask me, Hey, could you get on this call with this potential client because X, Y, Z, and I said.
I can, but I think Jen on our team can actually do that and do it just as well as I can. So instead of saying, okay, yeah, they’re asking me, I’ll do that, I, I have like a pause of like, Hmm, somebody else can do that. And if somebody else can do that, I better not be doing it. The only things that somebody else can’t do in my company is record this podcast coach in my mastermind and in the various ways that I support VIP clients and show up in those ways that I’ve committed.
Run my webinars and that’s basically it. Then I meet with my direct reports. I give feedback. I’m the visionary. I’m the visionary for a lot of our launches, for our products, for the direction of our company. I am out of the day to day, and that is the only way I’ve been able to scale and scale in such a way that I love my life, like I talk to.
Especially service providers and agency owner businesses who they hate it. They are so burnout out and they hate it, and they think the answer is, I gotta get out of the agency. And that is one answer. You also can build it so that you’re not in the day to day. So having this conversation with my client, I said to him, here are the two things that you wanna look for when getting that help.
What is draining your energy? What is. Causing you to be distracted, feel drained after you do it, delegate that or, and or what is taking away from something bigger that you should be working on. Because there’s this line, and I told him this. There’s this line where. You don’t wanna, you don’t wanna delegate the things that you love doing and actually fuel you and give you energy.
And I think that’s a mistake I see people making by accident. ’cause they’re fed the narrative of like, delegate everything, get everything off your plate, which is great. But if there are things that you are uniquely good at and you love doing and they give you energy and they fuel you, then you should be doing those.
For me, where that comes up is I still weigh in on client strategies, but behind the scenes for our elite clients, like I am in the the Slack channels and I can pop in and I can weigh in on strategies and they, the team brings me things and then I can weigh in for my clients. So an example. That he used on his call is he was like, well, I have salespeople but I close higher than them.
And I, one of them was gone. And so I went in and did sales calls and we closed like 80% of the sales. And I was like, this is super fun and I should be doing this. And I said, well, do the sales calls drain you? And he said, yes. And I said, okay. And do you feel that when you are booked with sales calls, you can work on other high level things in the business?
And he said, no. So I said, okay, your job isn’t, it’s not, it’s not this black or white like I need to do sales call calls or not do sales calls. It’s how do you get your involvement in the sales calls to be just enough to where you can lead it and you can get your salespeople to be doing the calls like you, and you for sure can do that with the right person and the right training.
So that’s you maybe. Watching a couple recordings a week and providing feedback. Maybe you get on one call, you use that to train your team. It’s not the black and white or of I have to do sales calls, or I don’t have to do sales calls. It’s how do I take what’s missing when my team does sales calls compared to me and train that for them and support them with that.
So, so sometimes you have to look at it that way. Had another girl in the Mastermind today on the call who was saying, I love client strategy. She’s got a social media marketing agency. And she said, you know, when something isn’t working in a client’s social media, I love to be the one to come up with the innovative idea and to turn around the results.
And I said, don’t stop doing that. Don’t take away what you love. You just don’t have to see it as I either have to execute for these clients or not. You have your team come to you and say, here’s the client. Here’s where they’re not hitting the goals. Here are my ideas. Can you weigh in? And then this individual, I guarantee you, in 20 minutes, could give the team a bunch of things to go do and go implement in the account.
The team takes it. The team talks to the client, the team executes it. You’re still weighing in and doing what you love, but with the minimal time and energy investment, which fuels you and allows you to put it in the highest leverage places, I really think that the business owners who prioritize this.
And honestly like in your life too. I’m so grateful that this is a skill that I have in the way that I look at my life. But people are al always asking me like, how do you do all this? How do you meditate and how do you work out so much and, and run a company and have all these things and my core values, you can have it all.
But the way like tactically that I do that is I am so. Radically strict with where my time and energy goes and I’m constantly evaluating it. I constantly look at my week, how I spent it, what went well, what didn’t, not constantly, but I have a, but I have a system for that and I’m not, I’m not passive in my life.
I am not letting life happen to me ever. I am in the driver’s seat and not in a way of like, I need to control everything. I think I’ve. Probably still struggle with that, but if overcome a lot of that, I’m all good for letting the universe show me and, and guide me, just like with this whole situation, with my training and my back.
But I am intentional with my time and energy because that is something I can control and I can’t control all the things happening around me and my external environment. I can control how I show up. I can control what I choose. To put my time and energy into and how that creates my reality and where my business goes.
So that was the conversation I had with my VIP client in terms of delegating and getting support. And instead of looking at it as, oh, I’m paying someone to bring my packages in, like, I could so easily do that. Yeah, that might be five minutes, but it’s just another thing on your mind. And I’m not saying like, you know, bringing your packages in needs to be something everyone delegates for him.
That was his example. But all those things compound and when you are choosing a life of great impact, it is your obligation to your audience, to your customers, to the people you are here to impact. To protect your time and energy so you can show up in the best version of you. And for me, I am not ashamed to say that means I’ve got a full-time nanny.
I have help with cooking, I have help with house cleaning, all these things that I can’t do and do everything else I can’t and show up in the best way, even for my kids. Having a full-time nanny for me allows me to be a better mom because when I show up at the end of the day. And it’s time for her to go home.
I am fully able to be there and give to them because I haven’t spent all day running around with them. And I would not be a good stay-at-home mom. Like I just would not. I’m not built for it, and I don’t believe my kids. Chose a mom who would be that I, I really believe they chose me and a mom who’s gonna show up the way I do because that’s what they needed in this life.
So, alright. I hope these two things were helpful. Got you. Thinking. I’m so grateful to be home and excited for the. Podcast that are to come. I will talk to you guys soon.
