Emily Hirsh:
Hello, my friends, welcome back to the podcast. We are officially up at the point of holiday season, and Christmas is almost here if you celebrate. I’m pretty much ready for Christmas; I’m excited. My kids are off school. Hopefully, you don’t hear them. It’s always harder to record. I actually told my husband I was like, what I want for Christmas is you to build me a recording studio on our property. He’s not really going to be able to do that. We don’t really have a spot for it. But um, I would love that because it is. As you know, if you’re a content creator with kids, it can be challenging on those weeks when they’re home from school to record when your office is right outside the kitchen. Anyways, so I just got back from Charleston, South Carolina. I was there with Taylor Simpson; that’s a retreat I went to in September if you’ve been following along for a while, and I joined her mastermind in October. I joined, and so there was an in-person meetup, and it made me so excited because. I was actually one of the reasons I joined her mastermind was because, yes, I, of course, want like the business support, but more so than that honestly I wanted to use it as inspiration for my mastermind and also see her coach in that way and like witness her because it’s something that I’m stepping more and more into is that coaching with the launch of my mastermind and probably future other things I don’t know what that looks like yet.
But that’s actually was my biggest intention in joining the mastermind was not really to get necessarily like. On the agency side advice and and strategies but more so like me personally and the direction that I want to go in this new found offers and opportunities that I have such as my mastermind so I went through her mastermind in person last week and got so much inspiration and just was feeling so freaking excited for the mastermind that I’ve launched that starts in January. We do have a couple of spots still left but 4 right now I have a couple of people who have said yes, but not locked it in so right now we still have four and. I am so excited I mean this is going to be. This is the most important thing I’ve created to date. It’s also just an opportunity for access to me that hasn’t existed before. The only way to work with me 1 on one has been vip days because I’ve built my company to run without me and my team is amazing and they can execute on the ads and the copy and the creative and the strategy honestly better than I could but I also am a really good business brain like I can sit down with someone and understand your business, understand where you want to go, understand you and be like boom boom boom do this do this.
So this so for these women I mean they are going to get my brain on their business on their business strategy on their marketing on their marketing strategy on their offer and then also integrating that into. Everything else in their life. Their health, their relationships, their own personal development like the leadership, whatever they need – they are getting because it is only 8 women and so after going through this retreat and kind of seeing the exercises in the way Taylor ran her hot seats. It just gave me a lot of inspiration and I cannot wait because one of the things included in this mastermind is an in-person retreat in Austin in the spring and it’s all included so you just fly here and I’m taking care of the house and the food and the entire experience. So. If you haven’t heard or looked into the mastermind. Um, you can send me a Dm on Instagram with the word elevate or you can also go to hirschmarketing.com/elevate and check it out. It’s a lot of 1 on one with me. It is an in-person retreat, you’ll have basically access to me for six months every day. So it’s going to be pretty dang incredible and I already am just so excited for the women who have joined so far. So today’s episode I titled it kind of funny, I did that on purpose because I wanted you guys to be like wait, what is she going to do, stop talking about marketing? No I am not and at first I was like I don’t know if I should record this episode like is it valuable but I do think it’s really valuable and I think that especially after a couple of conversations I’ve had and then last week I also ran my two day workshop on creating your 2024 marketing strategy and a couple of. People’s conversations and questions were around really feeling burnout of content creation and burnout of their marketing and losing that inspiration and so obviously you guys are listening to this so you saw the title of this marketing of this episode being I am sick of talking about marketing now. I mean that in a way of like not forever but over the last I guess like four weeks I have felt this way and I go through phases of this and so number one I wanted to talk about this because it’s super normal when you are an expert in something and you like live and breathe it that you can get burnout from talking about it.
And so I want to talk to this and also tell you how I navigate this because it’s not the first time I felt like it and I also it’s not like I’m feeling totally burned out. I just have had weeks where I’m like ah what am I, what do I want to record a podcast on, like I’ve already talked about all these things and that’s the thing with marketing is you could go find all the answers in the podcast I’ve already recorded to having the most successful marketing strategy in the world. I lay it all out there I give it all to you and so sometimes I am like what the heck am I gonna talk about on this podcast because I’ve already told you everything and I know content creators can relate to that. So first of all I want to normalize that and I want to talk about how to navigate that because 1 thing that is really really important and this will probably surprise you that I’m going to say this. You will get tired of talking about something because you live and breathe that topic but you have to remember that your audience does not. They live and breathe their own business, their own industry, their own expertise right?
And so they’re not sick of hearing about what you’re talking about. And so sometimes I notice in myself I get tired of talking about marketing because I think I’ve already said everything when in reality number 1 people don’t retain everything they listen to number 2 they don’t consume 100 % of the content you put out and number 3 they often need to hear things multiple times. Over and over again before they actually like it lands or number 4 sometimes something doesn’t land with someone because of where they’re at right now in their business and their life and then it will land with that person in six months from now. So you just never know. So if you’re feeling sick about talking about the topic that you always talk about. Understand that is normal but your audience is not sick of listening and I think when you are really committed and focused on a topic, you actually want to talk about it so much and produce so much content that you do get tired of it because that means you’re doing something right, that you are focused what you don’t want to do is the second you get tired of talking about something you’re like oh I’m just going to totally change directions in my business because there is this fine line where we have to stay very focused in our business.
And sometimes that can feel more mundane and boring. It doesn’t have to feel that way all the time. But when you’re building a very sustainable long-term business sometimes there are weeks and there are seasons where you might feel like that more than others. It shouldn’t be like that 100% of the time if it’s always like that. That’s where you need to kind of reevaluate. The next thing is really understanding where do you get your inspiration from because for me when I feel very inspired and very lit up when I get to interact with you guys. So when I even, at the retreat that I was at, I got to interact with those women and share my gifts and expertise around marketing like that was very much a contribution that I had to the group in conversations and I felt very lit up and inspired by their questions by listening to their hot seats which then gave me ideas for content. Because I was able to see business and their experience through their lens. So also when I teach workshops or Webinars or I do guest trainings and people ask questions or I actually go through an experience I get a lot of inspiration from that. So I know if I am lacking ideas or lacking inspiration in the content I want to talk about I can go touch base with my team I can sit in on a team call where they’re talking about client scenarios I can do a workshop for you guys I can get people to ask me questions I can go out with friends and I can let that inspire me and so when you think about writers and singers for example artists in that way even like people who paint people who write all of those forms of art.
A lot of times the inspiration for their art actually pretty much most of the time. Comes from them living their life, going through an experience and learning from it and having emotions around it right? and then they take that and they use that to create their art that is the same thing with content creation. So if you treat your content creation as this very rigid. Like structure where you have to talk about this because this was the pre-planned topic and you become like a robot and you fully lose your inspiration. It is going to feel really boring and so when I start to feel that like I’m sick of talking about marketing like. I’ve talked about everything I’ve talked about it a hundred times I’ve told you guys everything there is to do about marketing like you can get it all when I start to feel that way I know okay I need to create an experience for myself outside of my office outside of in front of my microphone that actually has interaction and real life living within it and that will bring me back to inspiration.
So that’s the first thing I’ll do if I start to feel that way and then also this came up for me in the retreat when it was my hot seat which I’ll share with you guys. What came of that? So I think that having fun is so important that’s actually going to be 1 of my life core focuses of 2024 point this year it was surrendering like that is the word I’m going to get it tattooed on me that was my word and next year it is joy play fun at least that will be 1 of them. Um, and so when we are creating we will create so much better and deeper and easier when we are having fun and therefore feel inspired so thinking about and this was a question I had asked on the. Marketing workshop I did last week where someone shared that they really don’t like doing anything on social media. She’s like I like where I feel the most discomfort when I think about my year is having to create any content and the reality is most of us have to create content in order to have a successful business. But it doesn’t have to feel like this very negative thing. So I asked her if you had to create content and you had to make it fun. What would you do and that gave her some inspiration and so for me I look at what do I find the most joy in what is the most fun for me and so this came up in my hot seat last week where I basically went into the retreat and I was like I don’t really need anything in my business like I have a plan I know what my year looks like I know what my goals look like like I’m pretty solid in that and but sometimes I think I know the plan and then. You dig in deep with me and you find stuff and so I was like so I know that that could happen and I’m open to whatever comes up. Well what ultimately came up was Taylor asked me what would be something that is super fun that you would just like to have so much fun doing and you’re super lit up to do it. But it also pushes your comfort zone. Great question to sit with and I talked about a few things and I was kind of like oh I could do a retreat in Alaska like but yeah, that’s super fun, but it doesn’t push my comfort zone like that would be really easy for me. So what ultimately came of it is this. I’m not going to say too much but this new podcast I’m going to launch next year that is like literally just for fun like it’s not gonna be about marketing and it doesn’t have a purpose to create leads and make sales. But it’s for connection still but it’s for my creative expression in a fun way. Because one of the things I don’t get to do very much is use and express my personality and my sense of humor because I create so much content that is so so value-rich, focused, straight to the point which is amazing and that’s part of my brand and you guys love it.
But also I don’t get to just goof off so you’ll see it’ll be so good. Anyways I don’t want to say that as like that should be a distraction but for me specifically that’s going to be a way for me to create inspiration. By having fun by bringing that joy by bringing that lightness into my business and content creation and make it super fun. So it’s not a distraction like we’re not going to do some huge thing that takes away team resources. It’s going to literally be so easy and that will create inspiration for everything else. So if you look at your content creation and ask yourself like I have to create content. That’s the only rule like I just have to show up consistently. That’s the only rule that there is in content creation. How do I do it really? There are no rules like screw the rules you can do any type of format. You can. Do any podcast video whatever you want because at the end of the day. The best content is coming from creators who are super inspired and lit up to share it and they’re having fun and they’re in that energy space and so how do you create that for your business is the question to ask yourself. And sit with that. It took me like 20 minutes to kind of come up with this and then I was like oh like I’ve thought about that before but I’ve always been like ah like I could never do that and so you guys will see. It’ll be good the next time I have 2 more points on this that I wrote down.
I think it’s so important for content creators to take breaks from their day-to-day, like mundane things that they do. And like I said earlier, artists find inspiration outside of where they create the art most of the time. So you’re not going to sit at your desk and stare at your screen and have your mic ready to go or your camera ready to go and just all of a sudden have an inspiration for an amazing piece of content. No, you’re likely going to think of that content while you’re in the middle of talking to somebody, while you’re snowboarding down the hill, or hiking, or going for a walk, or working out, or falling asleep. But like most of the time, my inspiration comes from all of those moments, and pretty much never does it come from sitting in front of my computer in Sydney. For me, having breaks where I go like a week or even two weeks and I don’t create any content because I batched it and I gave myself that break, and I go on a trip or I just have a week off or I delete Instagram from my phone and I create that space so that I can live and be separated from the day-to-day that feels mundane, so that my content creation doesn’t feel mundane. And that helps me a ton with inspiration, creativity, and I think having that like once a month really or for a while, I was doing this routine where I would delete Instagram from my phone every weekend.
And yeah, I mean for me, I create inspiration when I’m actively doing something completely outside of working; that’s when I get the best inspiration. So I need to make sure that’s a part of my regular everyday life so that I can be creating that inspiration. The last piece around content creation is, and I kind of just said this, but making sure that you’re not really creating from a place where it’s forced. I never—I’m thinking if that’s accurate. Yeah, I never create a piece of content, a podcast, a video, writing a social post if it feels forced. I will wait until it doesn’t feel forced; I will wait until I feel even just a little bit of inspiration. So yes, there are times that I feel burnout, but I will somehow, some way, like if that means something goes out a day delayed or if it means I have to clear my day because I got to get out of the house and drive to the coffee shop so I could think of something to record and wait until I feel that energy of like, “Oh yeah, that’s it.” And so I will never be like, “I’m recording this podcast because my team told me to or because this is what I had in the docket” and it feels forced. Like if it doesn’t feel right, I’m not creating it because I know that that energy is going to come through. It’s not going to even be good content.
The connection won’t be there with you guys. It’s not going to be authentic and I just can’t do it. So there’s been a hurdle for me a little bit in YouTube videos. I’ll give you this example because YouTube is very different. Like in order to do well on YouTube, you have to basically do research and come up with video titles and like thumbnail inspiration based on what’s doing well on YouTube because you’re trying to play the algorithm. Well, I hired someone to help me come up with those topics and there are sometimes I get back the topic and I’m like, I don’t really want to do this video. So instead of not doing the video, like I keep the title the same but I change it so it feels okay for me. So there was one video that I did that was around like making x amount of money as a work-from-home mom and I was like, I just can’t get behind making a video and saying that and using the income I make today because it just doesn’t feel right to me because I have a full-time nanny and I have a whole team, like I’m not really a work-from-home mom. Like I am, but I also am not like side hustling. So I used it, but I waited until I could figure out how I felt inspired and aligned to create the content. So I will never record a podcast, write a social post, write an email, or record a YouTube video if I don’t feel 100% aligned and inspired.
That doesn’t necessarily mean I’m pumped to do it; like I’m like, “Yes, I get to record four YouTube videos today,” I’m not always in that mindset. But I feel inspired and I feel aligned. I think aligned is a really good word to use there. So if you don’t, sitting with how do I get myself there and what would bridge the gap for me, so that I did feel inspired and aligned and see what comes up. So those are my tips. I am going to continue, of course, to talk about marketing content. But I just decided, like why not be real and tell you guys, like sometimes I am seriously sick of hearing myself talk about marketing. Like I talk about it all the time. I do workshops on it all the time. I live, eat, and breathe it and I know you guys can relate to that, so normalizing that and then learning how to work with that in a way that’s very productive and effective for your business because, like I said at the beginning, just because you are tired of hearing yourself talk about it, your audience is probably not. Like you guys probably are not; that is why you’re coming back to the podcast. You’re not like, “Well, I’ve heard everything I need from Emily,” you want to come back to the podcast, you want to get marketing advice. So there is always a way to create alignment to create inspiration while also moving through those times where you’re like, “I just don’t want to create more content.” So ask different questions. Get creative again. The only rule with content creation is consistency; that is literally it. Everything else, how you do it, it really doesn’t matter and I’m going to prove this with my new podcast. Just wait. It’s going to be so good because I’m going to basically break all the best practices.
And then it’s going to be super successful because it’s about the content and the connection and the energy that I created. So that’s happening next year. I’m so excited for it because it’s just all fun and it’s like no expectations but fun. So all right, you guys, well have an amazing Christmas if you celebrate. I’m like, “Okay, yeah, there won’t be another podcast coming out until after Christmas.” So if you celebrate Christmas with your family, I hope that you have an amazing one and you unplug and you soak in the moments. I know that’s what I’ll be doing with my kids. And I appreciate you guys. I will bring the fire next week on the last week of 2023’s podcast episodes.
